Overview
What is the Martial Way Academic Coaching
Program?
While Kung Fu, Aikido, and Yoga are separate practices, they have many
underlying similarities. One of the main areas of convergence is relaxation. From a relaxed and
alert state (contrasted with a lethargic or hyperactive state), children become clearer and
better organized in their thinking. The body is warmed up and strengthened, blocked energy is
released, stress is relieved, and children are in an optimal state of mind to begin their
homework. Confidence, learning through teaching, joyful effort, patience, ethics to improve
academics, concentration and insight/creativity are all principles that are taught in martial
arts training that can crossover into how children approach their homework. The goal of this
program is not short term in nature. Instead we seek to provide children with a
balanced foundation upon which they can build their learning habits that can provide robust
benefits that last their entire lives.
The program is an innovative multi-disciplinary approach that uses the
transformative principles of traditional martial arts training and yoga to help children to
succeed in school. Children will have the unique opportunity to train daily in
several disciplines --- Kung Fu, Aikido, and Yoga --- and be mentored in how to imbue their
academic life with the same principles they learn on the mat.
Are you a tutoring program?
No, we are not, although some interfacing with academic ideas is natural
to the process. Rather, we are longtime practitioners of these three
disciplines with varied professional and educational backgrounds (see bios). While children will
do their homework as part of the Martial Way Academic Coaching program, and instructors will
help children with their homework, our emphasis is on helping children to find an expedient
framework with which to approach their schoolwork. Homework is done in the context of the
overall martial arts training.
Do children have to attend five days per
week?
No, parents can work out a schedule that fits the needs of the family. However, the
intention of the program is daily participation and we feel significant time spent will be
necessary to accrue the desired benefits. For this reason we charge by the semester rather than
monthly.
